John T. Hoffman

Good afternoon, everyone,
It is truly an honor to stand here today as we celebrate John’s accomplishments and the positive impact he has on the community.

We recognize John Hoffman as a Legend of Port Norris. John’s story is one of service, commitment, and leadership, but at the center of it all has always been family. In 1983, he married Rita Capaldi, and together they built their life and raised two sons, Josh and Matt. Today, they are proud grandparents to two grandsons.

That same sense of responsibility carried into his community work.
For nearly two decades, from 1999 to 2018, he devoted himself to the Port Norris Rotary Club. He volunteered wherever people needed him. He acted as Sergeant-at-Arms in 2003 and then led as President in 2008. He reliably organized community traditions, especially the Bay Day Parade. These events united people and energized the town's spirit.

But John’s service didn’t begin there. In the late 1970s, he started as a junior firefighter with Port Norris Company No. 1. On December 1, 1980, he became an active member, and from that day forward, he never looked back. For more than 45 years, John has answered the call, serving his community with courage and consistency.

He didn’t just serve, he led. As President of the Fire Company from 1982 to 1984, and later as Secretary, John helped shape the organization in ways that are still felt today.  John continued to climb the ranks… and in 1992, he became Chief of the fire company, a position he held for the greater part of twenty-five years. It’s no exaggeration to say his footprints are all over that firehouse.

And if you know the Hoffman name, you know that dedication runs deep. The Hoffman family has long stood as a pillar of service in this community. John carried that legacy forward when he took over the Hoffman Funeral Homes in Port Norris and Leesburg from his parents, Bob and Liz Hoffman. For many years, he has been there for families in their most difficult moments. He offered not just professionalism but compassion, dignity, and care.

That kind of service doesn’t get much recognition. It’s not something people always see, but it’s meaningful, and it matters.

This past year, John had to step away from his work due to frontotemporal degeneration, a rare neurological disorder. It’s a difficult journey, one that he and the family continue to face with strength and grace. We also want to recognize his participation in research at Pennsylvania University Hospital, contributing, even now, to something that may help others in the future.

But today is not about hardship.
Today is about legacy.

It’s about a man who showed up, again and again, for his town, his neighbors, and his family. A man who led with humility, served without hesitation, and left this community better than he found it.

John, your impact cannot be measured in titles or years alone. It lives on in the lives you’ve touched, the traditions you helped build, and the example you’ve set for all of us.

It is with deep respect, gratitude, and admiration that we honor you today as a true Legend of Port Norris.
Thank you.
