Thelma M. Barnes Weems

Thelma was born on April 23 1933 to the late Amos and Martha Lee Barnes in St Mary’s Co. As an infante she came to New Jersey.

She attended schools in both Philadelphia and Port Norris school districts, and later in the Millville public system. In an early relationship Thelma met Jackie Hayman, and through this relationship they had two children. Both deceased Jackie and Harold Barnes.

Thelma worked in her uncle’s General store, and part time in the Oyster house industry. While working in the general store she also helped prepare income taxes for the many sailors during the tax season. Thelma also helped make paper dresses for the Tom thumb wedding dresses for the Girl Scouts club. This was headed by the late Gwyndolyn Dennis in Port Norris.

Thelma met the love of her life Clarence Weems Jr. they were later married on May 30, 1954. In this union of 60 years, they had five children. Terry, Carmen, Clarence, Donna and Kimberly. Thelma went on to work at the Diane shop in Millville. Thelma was in charge of the window and clothing displays in the store. After leaving the Diane shoppe she went to the Vineland State school and worked for 5 years.

Thelma then started work at Armstrong which is better know as Kerr glass for over 28 years, which they later changed the company name to Foster Forbs.

After retiring Thelma dedicated the rest of her life with her husband. Thelma is a long time member of the St. Anthony Catholic church.

She is a volunteer for the food pantry and is still an active volunteer for the many activities for the church. Thelma is an avid shopper always looking for a sale in her favorite stores in either Boscov’s or Macys.

Thelma is happy to join both her Father Amos, and Brother Ernest Barnes in the Legends Hall of Fame.
