Storytelling February 28, 2015
2:00pm – 4:00 pm
“Religion in the Bayshore Region”

The very popular ‘storytelling’ session is presented bi-annually. Local ‘old timers’ and tradition bearers present on a chosen topic, with large, curious audiences who are invited to share stories or listen to tales about the Bayshore Region. Share a memory from your lifetime, a family anecdote or recollection, bring a photograph or artifact or just come to listen and learn.

The event is recorded and the information collected may be used in future exhibits, and for research and education purposes as part of the Delaware Bay Museum & Folklife Center and the Port Norris Historical Society.

The Bayshore Center and the Port Norris Historical Society invite the community to their Storytelling Session to share stories or listen to tales about the founding of religious congregations, their triumphs, struggles and contributions to the Bayshore Region. Share a memory from your lifetime, a family anecdote or recollection. Bring photographs or news articles to share or just come to listen and learn. The program will be recorded. Both organizations want to capture the essence of those houses of worship which set the mold for the Bayshore Region’s religious culture.

Program is free and refreshments will be served. Location: Bayshore Center, 2800 High Street, Port Norris, NJ 08349

NEW ROOF September 29, 2014

It was a special day in Port Norris today. The original metal roof from 1890, we have been talking about so much came off. Here is one shot of the last pieces to come off. We all have great respect for these old buildings and the countless stories they could tell. And we will give this 1890’s meeting hall a new metal roof this week. Thank you to everyone who has had a part.

And so it began today, the first pieces of the old trim and chimney’s came down. The photo here is the first piece to come off. Due to the pending weather coming our way, they will hold on removing the metal roof until Monday the 29th. But it has started. Keep your eye on the yellow building on Main Street. Thank you again to all for your support.

REPLACING 120 YEAR OLD ROOF IN PORT NORRIS

There is considerable excitement about replacing the roof on a building on Main Street which was built by Civil War veterans in 1890. The current standing seam tin roof is the original. The Port Norris Historical Society with a matching grant from New Jersey Historic Trust the 1772 Foundation and the hard work and generosity of it's members and the community, are now able to replace that roof.

This historic event will take place very soon. Probably starting next week. One of the goals of the society is to reestablish "pride of place"

In this historic town. Along with the Bayshore Center at Bivalve, we are putting new life into this old building. It is remembered fondly by the many residents who once lived here but have since moved away. This is news worthy. If you agree, either to send someone to cover the story or to print excellent quality pictures with the story from us, please contact me by e-mail or at 785-1374. We are one of only 27 recipients of the grants this year.
