BRIDGETON — The National Park Service has awarded Cumberland County $49,500 to study what’s believed to be the only documented military action in the county during the American Revolution.
The grant, which is part of the American Battlefield Protection Program, focuses on the Battle of Dallas Landing, a deadly 1781 confrontation on the Maurice River between Continental troops and British loyalists. In December 2012, the county Freeholder board gave the green light to pursue a grant up to $75,000 from the National Park Service.

Marsh fire leaves 68 acres scorched
in Port Norris

COMMERCIAL TWP. — State Forest Fire officials are still investigating the cause of a blaze that left approximately 67 acres of meadow and one acre of forest along both sides of Memorial Avenue burned down to the stubble.
The blaze, which was first reported at around 5 p.m. Tuesday night, was declared fully contained by about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
Four properties along Memorial Avenue were evacuated for a short time Tuesday evening for precautionary reasons, as crews from Port Norris, Laurel Lake, Mauricetown, Dividing Creek and Leesburg fire departments, as well as the NJ Forest Fire Service worked to contain the fire.
"The strategy [for fighting the fire] was to let it burn itself out," NJDEP spokesman Larry Hajna said. The location of the fire on a tidal wetland impeded crews' abilities to bring equipment within range.
Other than the small patch of woodlands at the meadows edge, the fire was contained to the meadow, though it did jump across the road.
Officially, the fire is under investigation by the N.J. Forest Fire Service, though there is some speculation that it may have been sparked by a lightning strike.
"There were some storms in the area around that time," Hajna said.
