John James Maddox Sr.

John James Maddox Sr. Is a lifelong resident of Port Norris. He was born on March 10, 1944. As a child he attended the Port Norris Brown School and graduated from Millville Senior High School in 1962. While in high school, John was an outstanding track champion for which he received many trophies. He was honored and awarded by the Millville Thunderbolt Club for winning the 1961 All State Group III 180 Yard Low Hurdles.

John worked at Gorton Seafood, at Wheaton Glass for almost 10 years, at Washington National Insurance for 15 years and at Durand Glass for 15 years, and from there he retired.

On March 30, 1963 he married his childhood sweetheart, Jean Dorothea and they had four children; Sheryl, Kimberly, John Jr. and Lamar. They have 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. 

His activities include watching a good movie, bowling and singing. In his younger years, he was the lead singer of a band called “Johnny Maddox and The Mighty Rimshots”. He was also a leader for the Cub Scouts, Pack 136. 

John is now an active member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Port Norris where he serves as a Deacon. He also helps in the sound room when needed. At one time, John participated with the Shiloh Men’s Choir, Mass Choir and the Praise and Worship Team. He also sang with the Community Men’s Choir.

John is a quiet, but strong spirit, who is always willing to help others and lend a helping hand.
